Interdisciplinary Education High School English teacher Janine D'Aurizio paired a nonfiction literary selection with a cross-curricular real-life science application. As related to the themes in the short story "The Necklace," students had to conduct scientific research and experiments to determine which necklace was made of real diamonds and which one was not. They were encouraged to study the necklaces and make a determination about the authenticity of the stones. After they made their decision, they had to use three pieces of evidence to support their claim. Many students were surprised to find that their findings were correct.
