okay good evening everyone I think we'll get started just so that you know we are a recording this presentation right now so that we can post it for future reference and for anyone who happy and attendance we are going to ask that you number one from your microphones and your your cameras off right now to avoid distractions and save your questions until the end you can type them in the chat if you want or we'll open it up for questions at the end and I'll stop the recording before then just so that you know in case you don't want to be recorded we don't have to worry about that but we do want the information to be recorded So my name is Christina Buster I'm the guidance supervisor at Secaucus High School in middle school I'll be presenting tonight along with mrs. Kate Susanna who's one of our high school guidance counselors and we do have a lot of information for you regarding I'm what you need to be doing right now and thinking about College Planning for college if this is a first-time child going to college or if this is you know your third child we have some new information for you just didn't make the process a little bit easier and smoother for you starting right now okay so the first thing we want to talk about are your options everyone thinks that college is the only option After High School in that's definitely not the case in terms of college there are two options there are two year associate degrees at community colleges students can work towards that graduate with an associate's degree and get job opportunities they can take his get their associate's degree and then move on to a 4-year college and pursue a bachelor's degree a lot of students in the past few years have been opting to start at a community college and then move on to a 4-year College in order to States Community College tuition is significantly cheaper than a four-year college and often times if you transfer in good standing colleges will accept the majority of those credits and horses so it does say this again an amount of money I'm so even if you're someone who does want to pursue a bachelor degree if Financial finances are an issue you might want to continue starting at a community college if college is not for you obviously there are plenty of other options we have had more and more opting to God pursue the military After High School we have students who go straight to a job or employment and then we have students who are interested in a technical school all of these options are are things at your students your children should be discussing with their guidance counselors and we can give guidance in in terms of where to go next to pursue any of these these Avenues common myths especially if it's if the process is new to you or you're intimidated about the process when you're starting to think about college there's a lot of talk about college what colleges want to see what colleges I'm are looking for what you should be doing High School to get into the best college these are some of the myths that we want to debunk right now so that you know what you're working with I'm number one test scores are the most important criteria in College admission that's not true test scores are definitely considered I'll be talking about this little bit more later but they are not the most important criteria in College admission you will see as we proceed with the presentation that there is when you when you apply to a college you're basically submitting a portfolio of everything about you you grades your activities letters of recommendation essays let you know everything that you've done in high school test scores are only one factor in that so that is definitely in the number to there's only one college for you might have a college in mind you might have you no cousins or siblings that have gone to certain colleges and they're encouraging you to follow in their footsteps but we encourage all of our students to keep their eyes open to all the opportunities that are out there number three along with that has wait until you get accepted to visit you absolutely don't want to do that especially if you're a student who intends to live on campus you want to visit before you apply I'm definitely or you commit to a college because you want to see everything about it and we'll be talking about that a little bit more next message if I'm getting a c in an honors or AP course it's okay because colleges will be impressed with my determination as guidance counselors we see often when we sit down to do course request many students in this is to their credit they're very ambitious they want to load their their schedule with honors or AP courses and that's great if that's something that works for them. However if it's if a Vegan eat course is going to cause them to earn a lower grade that could potentially affect their GPA and we're going to quickly just show you our GPA scale that we work with at Secaucus High you know it might be a little small on your screen but you can see if you look at us we have a weighted GPA system if you have a student who is in a college prep class what's a regular a level course and they are burning a minus let's just say that that's a three-point that goes into their grade point average if that same student decides to take that course as an AP course but they only earn a C+ that goes it has a 3.4 so actually they back the days damage their GPA by chance getting himself or putting them in a course that's above their head in terms of GPA yes it's nice to have you do an AP and honors course on your transcripts however your GPA is something that factors highly into college acceptance those options and keep that in mind we are starting the scheduling process for next year right now and as as you know there are many prerequisites for horses I was so as long as students meet the prerequisites we do encourage them to take honors and AP courses so that you know if they don't meet those prerequisites that's not the only Factor okay being in the forces that they're recommended for and doing well in those courses will help them significantly in terms of getting into college you need to decide on your before you can choose a college that's definitely a mess as an 8 17 and 18 year old the majority of them do not know what they want to do as a long-term career they they should be choosing a college and has plenty of options that has options that they may be interested in but there are many opportunities to change to transfer and things like that if I haven't heard of a college or university can't be very good that's a myth obviously there are hundreds and thousands of colleges and universities across the country in the world you haven't heard of many of them you've heard of a lot of the local colleges open your eyes make sure that you know you're exploring a lot of opportunities and I should have done the most prestigious college that accepts me I'm we'll talk a little bit more about this there's a lot of factors that go into choosing the college for you in terms of Finance his location the majors and interest at inside and outside of academics so Prestige isn't the only thing that we're looking for about the college process it can be very overwhelming and you might actually walk out of this presentation feeling a little overwhelmed and that's because it's a lot of information what you need to do is keep the process in perspective work together as a family sure that you're communicating in terms of you know what your expectations about what's acceptable them what's not acceptable and and financially what can what is realistic and non realistic going forward and and just make sure that these are things like I said that you're coming sitting with you're at your child now throughout the process now and throughout the process however even though you're working together as a family students must ignore ownership of this process you have to think that this is the start of your adult life and parents this is where they are starting their independence true Independence they need to take ownership over this process student should be the ones submitting filling out and submitting their applications can you help them short but really they should know where they're applying they should have input into where they're applying and they should be they should be doing this themselves discuss finances openly start early and meatball deadlines and that's an important part that we'll talk about a little bit later and then meet awesome with your guidance cow students if you're in this presentation and parents if you're here the guidance counselors are have been an important part of your ear students life in the past few years of high school they will be an integral part of their their life next year from start to finish they need to be a part of this process they need to know every step what they're thinking about where they're thinking of applying what they're thinking of majoring in every step of the process so they can Tamika Barnes and make sure that they're filling out everything that they need to in submitting everything that they need you in a timely fashion okay I'm going to turn the presentation over to mrs. Susanna who's going to go over the nooks and crannies of the location process they're going to start with Naviance Naviance is an electronic portal that allows all supporting play submitted to colleges electronically this is a website that we use and we're going to show the students how to navigate it in-depth when the time comes as it gets closer to senior year the students was is that the students need to keep this updated with colleges that they're applying to and requesting their transcripts through this portal they also will request their teacher recommendation letters through the portal so it's very important that they keep this up to with where they are and we will walk them through step-by-step to show them how to utilize this but we are just want to introduce the name of this because a very soon we will be providing all the Juniors with their own personal login to this Naviance account so they each have their own private account that nobody else can see so whatever they put into it it's secure Naviance also has an essential feature that we use to show sooner how to do a college search it and it allows them to answer specific criteria such as location Majors cost if they're interested in playing a sport it can even narrow down by division and this will produce a very specific search that is dedicated to the student itself so we encourage the students to utilize this college Search tool to narrow down a nice list of schools that they should be applying to okay so here we have the SAT verse the ACT colleges will accept either testing most students in this area due to the SAT it is the most common exam in this location of the country however all colleges will accept either score so here's the difference between the two the ACT has more geometry the SAT which composer has more algebra the ACT has more reading comprehension verse the SAT focusing on evidence based question the ACT does have a science section nothing not specific facts but logic and Analysis and sat they don't focus on science but they will include scientific questions in their reading section both exams do you give an optional essay and not depends on what college is the students are applying to whether they need to utilize the essay component of the test the ACT gives less time however the eighth the SAT they give trickier questions and they challenge the little bit more with the questions that they pose and these are the two separate websites that the students can use to login create an account and register for each exam if they choose to are recommendations for a standardized test to take start to take one in the spring of your junior year and those will be coming up there is a May and June exam approaching they we also do suggest that they take the second one in the fall of the city of their senior year that way they can try to bring their score up because most colleges will superscore so if a student scored higher in math one setting but they score higher in their English and reading component on another setting they will superscore and take the two highest individual scores so students do like to take the SAT more than once they can take it and if they do choose to however after that it is found that the scores will not drastically improve the more you take it so we really don't advise taking more than three you register on College Board to take the exam you can include up to four colleges that you would like to send your scores to for free so we do encourage the students to do that while they're registering afterwards it does come to a point where they would have to pay to send the scores to each school I believe it's $11 per school so it can add up if you're applying to a number of school so we encourage you to utilize that access to those for free for free schools and if you are on you should speak to your guidance counselor to find out if you're eligible for a fee waiver if you are on free or reduced lunch in the school then you would be eligible and we can give you a code so that when you register you get a free exam you get free college applications and you get unlimited score report sent to the colleges you are responsible for sending your scores good colleges via the College Board we do not post scores on our transcripts so the only way the colleges will know what your score is is if you send it privately through the college board so that's very important hey so there are some changes to the testing over the past year that is occurred through you know covid-19 egg many students have not been able to take essay or ACT Testing because they've been canceled so there has been a big transition to what's called test-optional admission so many colleges throughout the country this year for the class of 2021 have gone to optional many of the colleges are continuing this for the class of 2022 some schools for example Seton Hall has gone into the fall of 2026 so this is a new thing that we're seeing a new trend that some schools I think are utilizing this opportunity to possibly see how students are doing without standardized testing so just so you know where there are three different types test optional schools the first in the most common is just the general test optional where students are given the choice whether to submit scores or not with their application if they do choose to submit it the schools will consider them but they will also highly GPA and their resume their letters of recommendation the essay and the strength of their coursework in high school the second option is text text flexible which allows students to submit other scores in place of an SAT they haven't taken one if they take an AP exams throughout high school they can use those instead of submitting an SAT or if they have by chance going to sit for an SAT subject test they can submit that as well you'll find this some more be more competitive highly selective schools that they are allowing this option just to assist with their admissions decision and then the third is test blind to these are schools that do not want an SAT even if you submit it do not look at them at all what's important is that you do look on each College website that you are applying to to make sure that they are continuing a test-optional policy and also if there are specific programs do we still require a standardized test for admission those mainly fall within the medical field so a joint MD program a physical therapy program some nursing programs in colleges are still asking for standardized testing so that is something that's very important that the students do you look on the individual School website said they are applying to just to ensure that they are meeting the the requirements here are some test dates that are coming up the next exam would be May 8th and June 5th now Secaucus has opted to not be offering SATs for the remainder of the 21 school year are we may pick up again in the fall a beginning with October and generally we do offer October November and December so we will see how that continues but for now if you would like to register for in May or June or even August Secaucus is not a hosting site so you would have to find a local high school that will that would be offering it is a $52 registration fee and then additional $30 if you do look fine late they do have weight window and we are still offering the March 24th sat school day the registration has closed but if yours your child is registered that that test is still happening I'm at here are some ACT Testing dates next one as June 12th in July and then a September October and December similar registration fee of 50. V $55 okay so what's important and what you can do when you sit with your counselor or is it with your parents is building a list first you want to think about who you are or what are your skills what are your interest what are your accomplishments these are things that you want to even composed into your essay that you are sending to your college think about what you want to do what are you going to be majoring in what is what are your life goals search for schools that fit all of these wants and needs and that you are looking for an alignment with your academic profile so you want get a feel for the campus what are the academics and special programs that they're offering what is the cost of the opportunities that they provide for students based on the major that you're looking at consider any any must-haves that you would like if the college does fit the bill freedom when you're building your list do you want to have a three sections your reach school this is a school that has a little bit more competition with their acceptance and their credentials are lower than average for the most recently accepted class so if you find that you have a GPA of 3.7 and this school the average that they accept is a 4.2 that would be considered a reach school at the school that you really want to try and if you could potentially move things along very quickly and get you or admission your applications done in a very Timely watching that it could be a chance for you the target schools these are schools that generally fit your profile very well you fall within the average range of what the school is looking for this should make up the already of your list most of the schools are flying to you would want to be Target schools and then it's always good to have a safety School in there a school that that accept higher than average percentage of students and the shoulder higher than the most average of the recently accepted class we always advised to have at least one safety School in your list so the best way to figure out if a campus is right for you is go there and walk around now unfortunately many colleges have not been able to host open houses or personal tours due to the shutdown but a lot of them are doing virtual so if you look on visual College websites that you're interested in applying to you will most likely be able to find a virtual open house or even a virtual tour you may be able to set up a personal tour with the schools but mostly play they will not be hosting large Open House events like they usually do this spring maybe possibly in the fall and hopefully in the fall because it is very important as mrs. which Buster said to go to the campus and walk around and get a feel for it get a feel for the town that is in the environment is it an open campus verse a closed campus things you want to make sure that you feel comfortable being there because this will be your home for the next four years whether you commute there or live on Camp you're going to be spending a lot of time there so it's very important to go visit the colleges as best you can in this situation so preparing for the college tour you going to contact emissions office to set one up or register for an open house as we said it might not be happening with an open house your best bet at this time might be to setup a private or make a list of questions and things that you would like to add your tour guide and what's new in and most exciting is that you can check out a lot on social media nowadays and even connect with students join groups that have students that go to the colleges and really you got to feel a good feel for what the college entails what the college is like is this a college that a lot of students leave on the weekend for staying what opportunities can a college have for you these are a lot of things you can get information from students themselves to go there and then again possible questions to ask what do students do on their free time on the weekends what do you love about this college what's it like to live here do you want to make sure that you're in an environment that you feel safe and secure what are the most popular programs are they offering the the major that you're looking for is it one of the most popular and generate tell her students try to find a college that does hold your major in popularity because that means that the majority of students a good amount of students are majoring in that and their hosts are holding a lot of weight the total cost of tuition including room and board and books are there's a lot of additional fees that go into going to college so you do want to factor those in and then we want to look at the different type of application deadlines that ecologist for which I will go into it in a in a little bit do some top things to look for in colleges that the colleges are looking for a number one right now really what is most important is a good GPA being that the SATs many schools have lot test optional the GPA is definitely weighing a lot higher now as well as a well-rounded resume and your essay your personality all of these things will come through in your essay as well as letter of recommendations from your teachers so you definitely want to build up let them see your character as much as possible now especially without SAT scores so types of admissions there's a number of different decisions that you might see when you are applying early decision this is a binding contract if you do apply early decision you are bound to go to the school if you are accepted the only way that you could potentially break the contract is if you financially cannot afford it and they did not offer you enough financial aid to attend the school other than that if you apply early decision you are basically signing away that you agree to attend to school many schools don't offer this type of decision it's not as common as the the next Wednesday that will discuss but if they do offer it and if a student is very sure and really has had their hearts set on this school and they really were go there and you discuss this with them and you can afford it regardless of what comes through that's the time to apply early decision the most common when you'll see is early action this is non-binding I'll just do to retract their you can only apply to one school early decision for early action you can apply to as many colleges as you would like early action this just means you are applying in an earlier fashion usually a line that occurs around about two months before their regular decision deadline it's showing the colleges that you are proactive that you have done all of your work early and that you were taking your senior year seriously we have that we do have a good I'm nice success rate with students to do you apply early action they also what a nice perk is they do. They get to find out sooner as well if they are accepted so we do encourage students if they seen earlier deadline to try to meet that a priority deadline this is where a student to apply by this day will go into scholarship running for scholarship money from the college's rolling when is something that is like first come first serve so as there is no set date where they can't apply anymore if they what the colleges will do is as they receive applications they will process and roll out a tooth Asian are usually within a matter of about two months with the thing with rolling decision is they will fill their spots as they receive application so it's not a situation where a student wants to wait too long to apply to that because are they their spot may have been taken by somebody else so you don't want to wait too long with that a regular admission decision this is where there is a set date and they cannot apply after that day usually with the regular admission deadline colleges will wait to let everyone know at the same time what their does Ed admission decision is a deferred admission means if you applied either early action or early decision and the college needs more information on you they potentially would like to see your mid-year grades and they it's not a yes or no they don't they don't want to make a decision just yet they will defer you to be regular admission Penn Station date and then wait-listed similar a college has not said yes or no on you they have the choice to wait list you and then wait until they receive their deposits how many students are going to be attending and then they looked at their waitlisted students and starts with administer decisions on that if you become wait-listed you may not find out by May 1st which is when your deposit whether you will be accepted or not and if a wait-listed school is your Top Choice you still need to submit a deposit somewhere if you receive a decision after that may first day and you want to go to the school you would just lose your pause it to the school you have have made it to okay so here we go with evaluating the application what's most important is your transcripts this includes your courses that you've taken from 9th through senior year and your GPA cumulative GPA include the first three year years of horses into the GPA and then we rerun the GPA after the first semester of senior year and we submit the transcript against all the colleges the students have apply to up to that again sat ACT scores or some schools should you require the SAT 2 subject test that is part of your application as well the essay the essay is going to hold a lot of weight now with schools that have gone test optional if you are not submitting SAT scores your essay is going to hold probably more weight than it has in the past it's a chance for them to really see your true personality and for you to give them a picture of Who You Are guy from just the classes that you've taken same thing with your resume which should include any extracurricular activities that you have done throughout High School including any honor societies any volunteer work jobs any kind of clubs that you have participated in any awards or Honors that you've received you want to include all of that into a resume we do advise that you asked for two letters recommendations from teachers preferably at least one within the field that you are looking to major in so if you are going into some kind of science field you should look for a science teacher if you're going into a bit Westfield you definitely would like to try to get a business teacher and then another four core teacher and then any any supplemental materials that will be necessary that you need to submit those are all the things that will go into your application okay so in terms of who is responsible for what when it comes time to submit location of the student is responsible for number one discussing with their their family and narrowing down and creating a list of schools to apply to that something at the guidance counselor can help with but ultimately it's up to the student and the family too a list of schools that they intend to apply to a man is the student responsibility to monitor their deadlines it is a student and as mrs. Anna talks about the different types of deadlines for example early decision and early action is up to the student in the family to decide which deadlines they are applying by it is a student responsibility to write their essays and we will talk a little bit about that in a little bit English teachers can absolutely help with that in fact many English speakers use that as an assignment early on and seen I'm so that can be a great deal of help with writing essays it is a student responsibility to submit the applications on time to send their test scores as Miss Susanna I mentioned earlier is your responsibility to go through the testing agency and request the score sent to the colleges that you choose to apply to it just did a responsibility to communicate with your counselor and request transcripts in advance it's a student responsibility to follow through with teacher recommendation so for Teacher recommendations make sure that they're following through and making sure that the teachers understand when their deadlines are so that those recommendations get in on time student and family responsibility to complete the FAFSA which we will talk about a little bit later that's the application for financial aid CSS profile which is a similar financial aid application if required and to make sure that social media accounts are appropriate and that's not something that we're going to talk a lot about but it is important to keep that in mind I'll just do you know what they may Monitor and look at social media accounts when making admissions decisions so we talked I mentioned earlier about how the diamonds Council will play a big role in your senior year in your college application process so what are their responsibilities I'm they're going to send the Secaucus High School profile to all of the colleges that you apply to the school profile can be found on our website I believe if not we will add it there that basically tells college is a little bit about our high school about academics about are the types of AP honors courses that we offer the activities that we offer the demographics our staff are GPA scale so they know how to compare us to other high school that's what the school profile and Tails it is the responsibility of the counselor to send your transcript to the colleges that you are applying to again it's a responsibility to request the transcripts and it will counselor responsibilities to send that using Naviance it is the council responsibilities to submit any comment app reports and we're going to be talking about the common application in the next few minutes if the student requests the guidance counselor will write up letter of recommendation for the student some colleges do require every letter of recommendation from the guidance counselors and others do not but if requested the guidance counselor will gladly write a letter of recommendation and it is obviously that the responsibility of the counter to support getting through the process answer questions and guide them so the common application which I mentioned you may or may not have heard of this the common application is basically when you look at college applications or applications in general you'll notice they are all the same questions name address your you know your academic history your family history your extracurricular history so please play the Common App is is is something that was developed a couple years do to reduce that process and it allows you to fill out for any schools that participate in the common application you can fill out the application one time through the common application and you could submit it to all of this accept the common application most of the schools you have a supplemental peace so that means in addition to what the common application requires they may I ask a few more questions but it definitely saves a lot of time if the colleges do except common application this might not even we may not have even updated this slide this year but last year there were approximately seven hundred colleges and universities across the country who accepted the common application they're made actually be more now that it is it could be a significant time-saver there's no disadvantage to using the common application rather than the college's own application the only thing I would advise you against the starting it now don't go on the common application and start it now for next year because they're going to refresh it they're going to change it for the following school year by August 1st so after August 1st of 2021 you can go on you can create an account and you could start working on that application pictures of letters of recommendation we talked about that and greet deal specifically every college is going to require or ask for you know a certain number of letters of recommendation on average most colleges after about two letters of recommendation so those they would like to see from your teachers so you need to determine the number of recommendations that are needed you need to speak with your teachers about those recommendations during the fourth marking. Of junior year asked in person face-to-face or virtually since we're in a new world if they would be willing to write you a letter of recommendation this is not an obligation for the teachers they don't have to do it however most of our teachers are are willing to do that for you so please ask the teachers that you would like to write you a letter of recommendation face-to-face if you can if they say yes then you will go into your log Naviance account and that you can you will request a letter of recommendation from them that's basically linking teacher to your Naviance account so that they can upload it right to your account and don't get overwhelmed by that your guidance counselors will walk you through that process so that you understand how to do that when asking for letters of recommendation you want to ask teachers who know you oh and can attest to your abilities and in the quality of your character you also may want to ask teachers who are in the subject area that you might be interested in pursuing so if you want to major in biology you might want to ask your science teacher to write you a letter of recommendation you also want to be sure to follow up with teachers in September of senior year just to update them if you special if you have an early deadline if you're doing an early decision application and maybe it's October 1st you want to make sure they have that letter in sometime in September and I will tell you many of the teachers at Secaucus High School there's a there are a few who are bombarded they are the popular letter of recommendation writers so if you if you do what's the time in time they may not be able to physically get your letter written in a timely fashion so just plan ahead with those letters the college I said we talked about in misters and I'll mention how it is actually becoming more important now that more schools have come test optional it's always been an important piece but Mr Thanos right is becoming even more important a lot of students actually don't believe that is the case and they kind of just throw together an essay that they think is grammatically correct makes and that's it and I think the rest of their portfolio will do the trick and that's a mistake we don't want you to make the essay could be the difference between acceptance and Rejection it provides information about you that the test scores your grade your transcript do not it brings you to life and it allows the admissions officers the chance to learn about you as a person and to see you forget O2 to see you come to life and distinguish you as an individual you might have an admissions office who has an almost identical transcript someone from Secaucus High School somebody from I don't know Sayreville High School somewhere D from High School in Tennessee they might have the same GPA the same number of AP classes very similar interests and and they only accept one you know what they're going to do they're going to go to the essay and they're going to pick which one speaks to them the most so the essay is is definitely important so just some tips on how to and like I said your English teacher will likely were hummus with you you will spend an average of two weeks working on your S8 but most admissions officers will spend an average of 2 minutes reading your essay so it needs to be I catching immediately on the best essay tell a story about the applicant it helps to think about the impact that the past events have had a hat on you you want to spend a good amount of time on your introduction and your English teachers have probably been telling you this all throughout High School your introduction is what catches the reader's interest if you lose them at your introduction probably not going to be all that interested in going forward your introduction is super important I'm you want to show rather than tell bring it to life don't say I'm a really hard worker show how you're really hard give examples bring it to life don't mention your GPA or your SAT scores in your essay they can see that on your transcript keep in mind will the admissions officer remember your essay and remember you after reading hundred more that day ask yourself when you're done writing it what about this is memorable what about this is going to make them pick me these are all things you want to just keep in mind I'm it is a process I know it seems like a lot of pressure but you know your English teacher work with you I'm if they don't assign this to you make sure that you ask them to read your essay for you at the beginning of the year okay so that is a couple that's most of the things about pretty much everything about the actual in portfolio a couple of things that we want to mention about opportunities at Secaucus high school that we want to we don't want to go on mentioned moving into senior year a lot of students might actually be taking advantage of our dual enrollment opportunities already but if not we offer dual enrollment credits through st. Peter's college or university for certain AP courses and courses with college equivalency these college credits are offered at a significant discount and basically what that means is he's our courses that are taught at sea Saugus High School by Secaucus High School teachers who have their master's degree and the course description matches a college course description so St Peters has said if you have students who take these classes at Secaucus High and they earn a grade of a c or higher if they paid for the credits at the beginning of the year they will also be awarded say Peters credits at the end of the year so you will learn your horse sample if you take an AP dual enrollment course if you take literature is dual enrollment you're going to earn your five credits at Secaucus high school and you're going to attend now and you're going to earn 3 credits at Saint Peter's university for a significantly discounted rate and when I say significantly I mean the course is right now about $225 for Julie Roman whereas if you took it at Saint Peter's it would probably be almost $2,000 for the course we have almost 20 dual enrollment courses that are certified for the 20 21 22 school year if you look in program of studies those are designated by a little book icon next to the course name another opportunity that we have in many Juniors might want to start thinking about this is our senior opportunity Pro so this is basically for students who are entering their senior you're having completed the majority of their graduation requirements and credits so they have to have it changed 210 credits upon entering senior year and they must be on track to graduate at the end of the school year they can have no excessive tardiness harasses his they must have met their New Jersey State Testing requirement and they must be able to complete the remainder of the required courses in the schedule morning hours basically what happens then if they World in a program is after their morning classes they are released and they are able to pursue other opportunities such as college credit options through St Peters and that's not dual enrollment those would be in addition to they could do volunteer or they can get a job or pursue an internship so basically what was the reason we designed this program is we have plenty of seniors who have met all the requirements and are just kind of filling in the gaps or feeling in the remainder of their schedule with Selective they may not need we wanted to remove that unnecessary time and their day and allow them to pursue something a little bit more productive I'm you can talk to your guidance counselor a little bit more about that if you're interested stole something that was mentioned earlier is the FAFSA which is the free application for federal student aid this is a very important Apple that you definitely want to fill out as you are applying to colleges it will become available October 1st of this year and we will have a financial aid night in September just to give up day and information on the application itself it's something that the student there is a student section and a parent section so it's something that you need to sit down together to work on the application does get submitted to the state and it also gets submitted to the individual colleges that you list that you're applying to you can list up to 10 colleges in this application so each College will get the application you will then receive a profile of what you're eligible to receive in terms of Grants and loans and then your expected family contribution which is what they the college expect you to be able to pay out of pocket may I offer you a different package so it's important to when you're looking at the cost of what colleges are you might see you know it's a private school that's listed for $40,000 a year stray away from applying to this because you may be eligible for a good significant amount of financial aid through the through on your application there is also an additional application called CSS profile not all schools require this this is specific to just number of schools and you would have to file this early in the fall of your senior year and then application is actually found on the College Board you can also find the schools requiring the CSS profile on the College Board as well so if you do apply to a college that does require this your application will be incomplete if you don't fill this out in addition to the faster they actually require yunobo the CSS profile you do have to pay an application fee for however the faster is free and you want to make sure that you go to that website fasfa.ed.gov that is the proper website it's not faster.com or fafsa.org those are false websites scholarships on we do release a packet of local scholarships to the seniors around time does they were released in February and they were posted on the school website there's usually around 40 local scholarship organizations that generously donate to our students each year and then. awards are given at the senior Awards night in June the students are not aware of what they may receive until they attend the awards night they would receive an invitation if they are receiving something but we are usually on a each year reach about $80,000 in scholarship just from these local organization so they've been very generous to our students some other websites are listed here there's fastweb.com scholarships.com college board has there section for scholarship going merry. Common kpax.com are all websites that you can login create an account and put in some information about yourself and a lot of them will start to match you with scholarships if you are planning to play a sport in college that is either division one or two you must register with the NCAA they have their own eligibility requirements that you need some we are the school I have ensured that work classes online with NCAA requirements so this our students are all set however there is a sliding scale for the GPA and sat that students do need to meet they are planning to play a sport if it's a division 3 school they do not need to worry about registering on this website but a division one or two they absolutely have to register and then some tools are the guidance website and what we utilize now the most is the guidance Google Classroom which I believe all of the students have joined and what we do Post there are links for information regarding open houses financial aid information any important dates scholarships that may come through that we receive through emails any summer programs a lot of summer programs are starting to pop up now employment Jesus somebody just contact us with a job opportunity will post it there and any parent information that you may find useful and just here are some important websites just to reiterate what we went through today the College Board where you would like will register for the SAT Naviance account which the students will receive their login information within the next month the Common App as this is Westchester mentioned for applying to colleges FAFSA which is your yours federal aid application and as well as the CSS profile on the College Board here are the individual guidance counselor email addresses and the email address of our supervisor mrs. West Western in case you do need to contact any any counselor with any questions email is a very good choice and we are in school now so you can call us but on emails helpful as well one more thing you just wanted to mention before we open it up for questions in terms of SATs just so that no one is confused regarding dates and availability at Secaucus High School for the Deaf we're all sat days are canceled as Miss Susannah had said these Saturday SATs I'm sorry the March school day is still happening for March 24th as I said if your student is registered that is still happy to check their emails because I did send out information in terms of that day going forward there are no the College Board only has one more school day in April we are not offering that at Secaucus high school but we do intend to continue offering sat school days as they become available in the so if they open up a school day in September or October we do intend to offer that to our students I'm if you have questions about that please contact me or any of the guidance counselors we appreciate you being here like I said we will open up for I'm going to stop recording now so that you're comfortable asking questions if you don't have any questions please remember I will be posting the presentation as well as the you know just the splice of the presentation so that you can click the hyperlink to the website I'll stop recording right now and then we will open it up for questions
